Another important benefit in having established an accurate construction budget is that you will know if a contractor is asking more money than they should.  For most clients, this is always their biggest concern and so it should be.  Fair clients expect the contractor to make a reasonable profit for the efforts they take.  No one wants to be taken advantage of.   An interesting discussion can be had when percent profits for a project are examined.  First, one has to understand what a profit really is for a contractor.  To be fair, a contractor should make sure they cover their overhead costs and not consider these as profit.  They also should pay themselves a fair wage for their time spent working the project.  Additional funds beyond overhead and direct labor are typically considered profit.
