The next section provides guidance on which work to attempt and what work is best left to others.  It is essential that you make the decision of what work you are going to do yourself before deciding on your contractor as some contractors will not want to work on your project if you do some of the work, depending on what you want to do.  Others will only give you a small discount after you have selected them if you then advise them that you want to do some portion yourself whereas they would have been willing to give you a much greater discount if the reduced work scope had been made available to them before they provided you with their final bid.  Further, the contractor you want to use may have some suggestions as to what parts of the work you can do with their approval and where you might save the most.
