With the first two steps completed, you will need to decide if you will require formal plans. Some projects do not require plans before you meet with the contractor. Projects are either simple enough that they can be described without plans (hopefully with a written document you have prepared – see below) or projects are such that plans are clearly required and you will need to develop them as well as finding a contractor.

Preparing a written document for simple projects not requiring plans involves writing out what it is you want to get a proposal on. You will be using the project description with emotional statements.

(Step 2) You might start with a one sentence summary, such as Adding Air Conditioning to our home.
